About Our Services

Consistent with University Healthcare’s Mission, Vision and Values, the Behavioral Health Unit at Berkeley Medical Center values the participation of our patients, their families and significant others in planningtheir care. This active participation supports patients to make optimum progress in treatment and sustain that progress after they are discharged. In order to promote optimum therapy and treatment outcomes for patients, the treatment team works with the patient’s support system to determine how they may help the patient reach their individual goals. We ask our families to support and encourage our patients to participate actively in the therapies and daily programs while they are in the hospital. Substance Use Services

While our Behavior Health Unit is NOT a detoxification facility, we do provide treatment to those patients with a secondary diagnosis of substance abuse. Eligibility for admission is determined after a qualified mental health professional assesses the prospective patient and then consults with the psychiatrist. Once the psychiatrist determines the eligibility of the patient, inpatient behavioral health services (or other services as indicated) are offered.

For those wishing to discontinue consistent use of alcohol or benzodiazepines, it is essential to complete a medically supervised detoxification process.

If an individual does not qualify for inpatient admission but is still in need of substance use services, an EPS Crisis Worker will complete a referral for an appropriate service outside of the hospital.

Warning signs that substance abuse needs to be addressed include:

  • Notable interference with school, employment and/or family roles
  • Neglect of children and/or household tasks
  • Decrease in financial responsibility
  • Emotional instability
  • Neglect of personal hygiene
  • Extreme or uncharacteristic aggression

If you have a family member or friend that is in significant need of hospitalization due to a risk of harm to him/herself or others, you have the option of filing a petition for commitment. This process includes completing the petition application, having it notarized, and contacting East Ridge Health Systems. From that point, a crisis worker at East Ridge will connect with the Mental Health Commissioner to present the completed petition. If the Mental Health Commissioner grants a hearing, the person filing the petition will be contacted and will appear as a witness at the hearing. If the person being filed on is deemed committable, the person will receive inpatient mental health services until they are documented to be stable and safe as determined by a psychiatrist’s evaluation. Documentation for filing a petition can be obtained through the Behavioral Health Unit at Berkeley Medical Center or by contacting East Ridge Health Systems (304-263-8954).

Our patients may have visitors from 1:00-2:00 p.m. and from 7-8 p.m. daily. They are broken into 20-minute increments to allow more availability for patients to have visits. We ask that visits be pre-arranged one (1) hour prior to visiting. This can be accomplished by dialing our direct line, 304-264-1230, one (1) hour prior to visiting and requesting a visit. Visitors are approved by the patient and physician and are limited to close family members and/or support persons involved in therapy.

Arrangements for visiting times to accommodate special circ*mstances are made through the therapist, nursing staff or attending physician. Visitors should call for special arrangements.

Each patient may have 1-2 visitors at a time. Visitors under 18 years old must be accompanied by a supervising adult and have a Doctor’s order.

We request former patients do not call or visit patients currently on the unit unless the current patient’s treatment team determines the former patient who wants to visit is an active member of the patient’s support system. Other forms of communication between current and former patients (gift giving, writing, phone calls, etc.) are strongly discouraged.

In order to allow for the completion of numerous patient assessments and to enable the patient to become engaged in his/her treatment, visiting may occur after the first 24 hours of hospitalization.
